Omniterra vs Squarespace: what selling online really costs

Squarespace is known for polished templates and an all-in-one website platform, and every paid plan can sell. Omniterra is built only for commerce. Here is how the two compare on plans, transaction fees, payment options and selling across borders.

Short answer

Squarespace is a website platform with strong design, hosting included and commerce on every paid plan. It has no free plan, but every site starts with a 14-day free trial with no credit card. The entry plan, Basic, adds a 2% transaction fee on online store sales; Core and Advanced have 0%.

Omniterra is an e-commerce platform with a free plan with no time limit and 0% commission on every plan. Card payments go through your own Stripe account, and you can add PayPal, Revolut, local processors, bank transfer and cash on delivery. If you want a beautiful site with a shop, Squarespace is a good fit. If the shop is the business, and you sell in several countries or take cash on delivery, compare the details below.

Plans and fees

Basic$12/month$19/month2%7%
Core$17/month$27/month0%5%
Advanced$25/month$36/month0%0%

All three plans list unlimited products, abandoned cart recovery, subscriptions, gift cards, a point of sale and print-on-demand. Core and Advanced add discounts, Google Shopping listings, shipping labels, carrier-calculated shipping and commerce APIs. Automated tax calculation isn't included on Basic; on Core it costs 0.15% and on Advanced 0.05%, each capped at $0.99.

Squarespace's fees guide explains that there are two separate costs: the processing rate charged by your payment processor, and the Squarespace transaction fee that depends on your plan. It also mentions a Plus plan that may not appear on the pricing page in every country; we didn't see it.

Squarespace Payments rates

For businesses in Ireland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Finland, Austria, Italy and Portugal, the guide lists these rates for domestic personal cards: 2% + €0.25 on Basic and Core, 1.7% + €0.25 on Plus and 1.5% + €0.25 on Advanced. Business cards, international cards and American Express are 3% + €0.25, with 2% for currency conversion. In the US, standard cards are 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic and Core and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. In the UK, domestic personal cards are 2.0% + £0.25 on Basic and Core and 1.5% + £0.25 on Advanced.

You can also connect Stripe or PayPal instead. The payment processor guide lists Squarespace Payments, Stripe, PayPal and Square, with Square limited to in-person sales in the Squarespace app.

On Omniterra, card payments go through your own Stripe account, connected in one click, with card fields in the checkout plus Apple Pay and Google Pay. We take no percentage on top of Stripe. See payments.

Worked example: €10,000 a month in card sales

Assumptions: a business in Ireland, as an example of an EU country. It has 200 card orders a month at €50 each, all on domestic personal cards in euros, so there are no international or conversion fees. On Squarespace it uses Squarespace Payments. Plan prices are shown as each company publishes them.

MonthlySquarespace BasicSquarespace CoreSquarespace AdvancedOmniterra Start
Plan, billed yearly$12$17$25€29/month
Processing rate2% + €0.252% + €0.251.5% + €0.251.5% + €0.25 (Stripe, Ireland)
Processing fees€250€250€200€200
Transaction fee2% = €2000%0%0%
Fees on sales€450€250€200€200

Processing: 2% of €10,000 is €200, plus 200 × €0.25 = €50, so €250. At 1.5%, it is €150 + €50 = €200. Stripe's Irish pricing page lists 1.5% + €0.25 for standard EEA cards.

To be fair: on Squarespace Advanced, the fees in this example match Omniterra with Stripe. The difference then comes down to plan prices and features. On Basic, costs rise fastest as sales grow: at this volume, the 2% transaction fee alone adds €200 a month.

Cash on delivery and selling abroad

The payment processors listed in Squarespace's help center are Squarespace Payments, Stripe, PayPal and Square; cash on delivery isn't one of them.

On Omniterra, cash on delivery is a full payment method, with a COD fee, order limits and the regions where it is offered. Orders the customer doesn't accept get a "Refused on delivery" status, and COD Guard gives each order a risk score before you ship. That matters in markets where many customers prefer to pay on delivery.

For selling across borders, Omniterra gives you a storefront in 19 languages with hreflang and multi-currency markets. See multi-currency and multi-language.
